If you're also looking for a quick and easy way to prepare your morning matcha latte, you've come to the right place. Have you tried it in the past and the result was a bland, lumpy, or grassy-tasting matcha latte? It's almost always a question of the type of matcha, dosage, and method. We'll show you how to get it right every time. By the end of this article, you'll be a matcha latte expert!

What you'll need

  • A whisk: A traditional chasen (bamboo whisk) is preferred for better dissolution and to create a relaxing moment.
  • A sieve: To break up small powder clumps and achieve a smooth texture. Not mandatory, but it helps a lot.
  • A bowl: Preferably wide, so you can whisk comfortably. Avoid using a cup, it's often too narrow for proper whisking.
  • A precise scale: Ideally accurate to 0.1 g. This small detail makes all the difference between a random latte and one you get right every time.
  • Chalala matcha: Our matchas have been specially created for lattes. Matchas that are too mild tend to lose their flavor in milk. Choose our 奋 Fèn, Barista Matcha if you want a robust matcha with roasted notes, or our 合 Hé, First Harvest Matcha if you want a creamy matcha with dark chocolate notes.

The recipe, step by step

Here is the Chalala method — our favorite because it's simple and foolproof.

  1. Weigh and sift 3 g of matcha into your bowl. This step prevents lumps and gives you a much smoother texture.
  2. Add your hot water (70-80 °C). The right proportion: 10 g of water for 1 g of matcha — so 30 g for your 3 g. Absolutely no boiling water: above 85 °C, matcha becomes bitter and loses its beautiful color.
  3. Whisk until fully dissolved, forming M's — like in matchaaa! Continue until you get a smooth and slightly frothy texture.
  4. Add the milk of your choice, hot or cold. We recommend cow's milk for an extra creamy result. Pour 90g of milk:
  • either into a separate glass, then pour your matcha mixture over it to create a beautiful "layering"
  • or directly into the bowl, for simplicity

       5. Optional: If you like your latte slightly sweet, 3g of maple syrup will be enough! (Our ideal ratio is 1g of liquid sugar per 1g of matcha)

Tip without a thermometer: bring your water to a boil, then let it rest for 2-3 minutes off the heat. You'll be right in the sweet spot.

Customize it, that's the beauty of it

Now that you've mastered the basics, the playground is immense. You choose your milk, adjust your matcha/milk ratio according to your mood, try maple syrup, clouds, a pinch of salt, or nothing at all.

You are now your own barista!

Make it your moment

Ultimately, a matcha latte is more than just a drink. It's the perfect excuse to grant yourself five minutes in the morning: before notifications, before the noise, before the day's rush. The time spent sifting, whisking, watching the foam form, you've already accomplished your first task of your morning routine and prepared your mind for a new day!
